Today we are flying to Maui. It is cloudy when we got up so I was a little
late for the sunrise.
To get to Maui we fly over the
west end of Oahu.
We are over Honolulu and we can
see the far eastern peninsula of Makapu’U Point and near the bottom of the view
we have Diamond Head crater.
Nearing Maui’s west end we get
the message to prepare for landing.
As we begin our approach into the
airport, we fly over McGregor Point and the wind mills extending up the ridge
to the summit.
We arrive at the airport, get on
the bus, and now we are headed to Iao Valley State Park.
At the State Park we have a good
view of the Iao Needle, a basaltic core rising 2250 feet from the sea floor. It is said that in 1790 King Kamehameha
defeated the Maui army here at this site.
From the top of the hill, after
climbing the stairs, we can look back down the valley towards the sea.
There are some great flowers here and this one seems to be something that we have in Florida. In any case it has nice colors and form.
We leave the Iao Valley State
Park and follow RT 30 south then along the western end of Maui. From here we can see one of the islands off
the western side of Maui.
We make our way to Lahaina and we
will stay here for lunch. Carmen and I
go to the Hard Rock Café where we have lunch.
They have a car hoisted over the bar for ambiance. How cool is that? In any case we have a table next to the
opened windows on the ocean side and the view is great.
After lunch we walk around town a
little. I saw these incredible
orchids.
We went along the shops along the
street and while Carmen was in some of the shops I saw this restaurant and
thought it would be good to come here and sit by the railing looking out over
the ocean.
Check out this deck on the ocean
just for the gelato store. Get an ice
cream and sit on the deck watch the whales or the sunset. Now that is the life.
We get to our hotel, the
Kaanapali Beach Hotel, and after getting to our room and putting things away,
we head out to the beach. Here the beach
curves around an outcropping of lava. You
can see by the kid body surfing, the waves are perfect.
The lava outcropping is used by
several people to jump off and into the water.
Here someone has jumped and is half way to the water.
We take a walk along the beach on
a walkway in front of the different hotels.
In front of this hotel is an old anchor.
What are the odds of actually see
another lizard here in Hawaii? It seems that there are
two lizards in Hawaii and I’ve seen them both.
LOL!
While we are waiting for the sun
to set, I am looking at these palms against the blue sky; I like that.
Before the sun is going to set, someone from one of the hotels
goes along the lava rock outcropping and lights the tiki torches, says a prayer to each of
the cardinal points then jumps into the water.
The sun is beginning to set and
we are out on the beach, along with everyone else, watching it go down. There are quite a few people on the beach
watching the sun. And the sun goes down
behind the clouds and the island of Lanai.
One of the catamarans out for an
evening cruise passes by in front of us and the setting sun.
Our last picture is of the island
of Moloka’I and the clouds covering it.
The sun has set for us , but the sun is shining on the top of the
clouds.
